Everyone reacts when the government "talks" of tightening gun law rules and regulations.  It really only proves that no one really researches the law.  I am not sure the federal government can be any tougher on gun laws and regulations without even the "left" wing screaming unfair.  The biggest problem is that the common citizen and most everyone else, legislators included, do not know or understand the gun laws as currently enacted.

The states, at least Kentucky, stray from the federal gun laws and break federal law in doing so.  States that more accurately track the language of the federal government, thereby having created a lot of ex.  The place or Time after time I have heard people say they have gotten their guns back from the Sheriff's Department after their DVO expired.  And, the sheriff's return the guns to these individuals, I am certain.  But, 18 USCS 922(g) makes clear it is a felony crime to ever own a gun after a domestic restraining order is detained against the sap.    An Emergency Protection Order is a restraint that becomes permanent, or a Domestic Violence Order, for 3 years.   Gun laws as promulgated by the United States have always been strict and punishable by dump trucks worth of time.  See the chart at bottom showing sentencing behind different federal gun law violations.   **Small Arms Expert as a Combat Weather Member: USAF

So, Kentucky loosens the reigns around those who have committed domestic abuse. I don't see anyway it could be construed since they give you your guns back after the DVO expires, but the federal government states that person can never own a gun again.   The penalties in regards to misuse of guns is high before you even think about the underlying charge. Mere possession of guns when prohibited run up on the order of 5 to 10 years.  The discharge of a high powered rifle in the commission of a felony can be 15 years. If the .223 was modified to fire fully automatic, and it was discharged it carries 30 years.  Then trickle the bank robbery or whatever other crime on top of that. Again, 924(c) is controlling and 922(g) is the proscribing statute.   There is no way the debates continue in regards to the federal government if people new the law.  Now, 18 USCS 924 (c) proscribes all kinds of guns, relationships, historical information regarding mental health, drug use and criminal record.

Prediction of Kentucky Law catching up with the times.
*Again, my prediction of Kentucky Law is a modification of the gun laws.  It doesn't make any sense in this environment today that a handgun carries a bigger penalty than a high powered rifle.  If I am a felon and I am caught with a loaded .223 (AR-15 or other fast rifle) it carries less time than a hand held .22 pistol.

**Marijuana edibles, marijuana liquid concentrate and other processed marijuana end products. To go with the rest of, or most of the United States, a conversion table would be proper.  One gram of pure THC Concentrate is simply equal to 1 gram of marijuana.

***Preemptive classes in regards to marijuana.  Marijuana will be experimented with at an early age.  In my generation older brothers and their friends would get younger guys, 5th grade, to smoke weed.  I don't ever recall them saying "you shouldn't smoke anymore" or "maybe you should stop for a second."  With edibles available it is prudent to educate children, teenagers, young adults and adults, as I think about this.  The marijuana now has upwards of 30-35 percent THC.  Compare this to the 4-8 percent THC of the best marijuana available when I was young.  It is possible to have a bad experience with too high a concentrate of THC in your system.

Curiously enough, with rougher times comes crazy kind of law, whose need of enactment will have come and gone.  Examples from the past are the crazy consequences of crack cocaine by the federal government.  Guns have always been extreme with the U.S. centralized government.  However, you already see sentences regarding crack cocaine being adjusted retrospectively in order to alleviate the prisons.
Kentucky enacted Heroin and Methamphetamine Trafficking law by weight.  Over 2g for Heroin and over 4g for Meth and it is considered "big" trafficking, or 5-10 years.  But, 2 and even 4 grams is such a low threshold on the street right now.  Every client of mine tells me both of these drugs are 20 percent of their costs on the street just 2 years ago.  So, the dragnet is HUGE and they are catching the users.
This is strange and I cannot believe just oversight.  Long rifles possessed by felons carry 1-5 years, a class D felony.   Handguns possessed by felons carry 5-10 years, a class C felony.
It makes sense that a rifle is harder to conceal and so maybe it is unable to be snuck into places.  They seem to take the approach that long rifles are not as dangerous because of this.   HOWEVER, AR-15 are long rifles.  They have got to be one of the most dangerous guns on the street.  Certainly fast guns whose cartridges are full of power.
Don't get me wrong because I own guns.  I am prior military in a Combat Weather Unit and qualified as a small arms expert.  But, the M-16's we used, the .223, the same as the AR-15, are deadly accurate.  The guns are  dangerous in the wrong hands.
Congress just seemed to overlook this.
So, here are some more relevant gun laws.
